President congratulates Derval O'Rourke
President McAleese has conveyed her congratulations to Derval O'Rourke on her Silver medal win in the European Athletics Championship in Barcelona.
The President said,' We are all incredibly proud of Derval's wonderful achievement and join in celebrating this well-deserved silver medal win for one of our finest young athletes.'
Irishman part of new transatlantic record
The Irish Times reports that "Ray Carroll (33), from Salthill, Galway, was a member of the team which plied a 23ft boat west to east, arriving over the weekend on the Scilly Isles 30 miles off Lands End."
The team broke one of the longest standing world records by rowing across the North atlantic unsupported in under 44 days.
Carroll has previously rowed in aid of the charity Aware and this time rowed in aid of the Jigsaw initiative for young people.
32 marathons in 32 Counties in 32 Days
Irish runners Ken Whitelaw and Gerry Duffy finished their 32 marathon challenge yesterday on the 2nd August, having each run a marthon in each county on the island of Ireland over 32 days, amounting to 835 miles in total.
This challenge has raised nearly €500,000 in aid of the Irish Autism Action (IAA). Both mean were exhausted but also exhilarated and happy to have finished the challenge.
