Locus Insight designed an interactive chart to show emigration from Ireland from 2006 to 2011.
In 2011, one person left Ireland every 7 minutes, 9 every hour and 209 every day. There has been a total increase in emigration from 35,900 people emigrating in 2006 to 76,300 in 2011. In 2006, migration contributed 72,000 people to the population of Ireland. However, by 2011, only 42,000 had migrated to Ireland. The CSO estimates that only 53% of the people emigrating in 2011 were Irish nationals with EU12 nationals accounting for 12%.
The figures were taken from the Population and Migration Estimates (April 2011) published by the CSO and estimates of Irish immigrants entering Australia and Canada were extracted from data published by those countries’ immigration authorities.
