An Indian student visiting Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands, was thankfully saved by an Irish couple after a large wave crashed over her and swept her off the cliff into the sea.
The 21 year old woman, Apu Gupta, was beside the famed wormhole (Poll Na bPéist) on Inis Mór, taking photographs when the incident happened.
Seamus McCarthy and his girlfriend Fionnuala Quigley witnessed what had happened and immediately responded. As soon as they had located Apu, Seamus tried to reach Apu with the help of other tourists while Fionnuala ran to get professional help as they had no phone signal. They tied a rucksack to an army jacket so that she could tie the rucksack on and they could then pull her in.
Seamus, an advanced paramedic with the Ennis Ambulance base, assessed her injuries until a rescue helicoptor arrived. She was later taken to Uniiversity Hospital Galway where she is recovering from a fractured ankle.
It is expected that Irish Water Safety will present Seamus with a ‘Seiko Just In Time Award’ for his lifesaving efforts.
This dramatic video by Brian Smith shows Apu being swept off the cliff.
