A new documentary has recently been aired about the disappearance of Mary Boyle in Cashelard, near Ballyshannon in March 1977 and the subsequent investigation into her disappearance. Written and directed by Gemma O'Doherty, the documentary "Mary Boyle: The Untold Story", it investigates the events after Mary Boyle, then aged 6 years old, vanished from her grandparent's remote farm in Donegal.
Two retired gardai on the case at the time are interviewed about it and it is their belief that there was both political interference, and garda interference, into the case following her disappearance and that as a result, the main suspect at that time, was not properly interrogated. One of the gardai said that while he was interviewing who he believes killed Mary, that a phone call came in from a politician, and he was told to ease off of the questioning of the suspect. He was later told that no further questioning of any family members would take place.
Mary Boyle's twin sister, Ann Doherty, has since talked to many leading politicians including Enda Kenny and to her knowledge, the suspect who is believed to be known to Mary, has still not been arrested or properly interrogated. However, two other suspects who are not known to have been in the vicinity at the time have been interrogated.
Ann Doherty believes that Mary was murdered to cover-up sexual abuse as Mary was 'feisty' and would have told. Retired Garda Collins believes this person is still a danger to children.
The questions that must be asked is why has there been no proper investigation, why are the gardai not following up on these allegations, and why are the political parties ignoring Ann Doherty's pleas for this matter to be investigated properly and why has the person she believes is responsible for Mary's disappearance and murder not been arrested and interrogated?
Gemma O'Doherty may be the only true investigative journalist left in Ireland and it is not the first time she was been in hot water after been made redundant following her questioning of Chief Garda O'Callaghan about the quashing of penalty points.
