The Second Story

Kathleen Donohoe
My heart beat slowly. From its pace, the doctor said I was probably a boy. In 1972, women weren’t awake when their babies were born and there were no ultrasounds.

Life is Good

It will be 15 years ago on April 30 that my son died.
With him, died, or so I thought, this tom-boy mother's dreams of sharing the beauty of nature with a son, the joy of sharing the otter’s fun as they played in the creeks and streams, the thrill of canoeing or kayak, hiking, cooling off in friendly mountain waterfalls… the simple joys of throwing softballs, shooting hoops, bike riding together, doing science projects together, sharing the wonders of rock hounding, and combing the beaches of the shores of the nearby rivers, lakes, and the Great Lakes…
I was reminded of these lost dreams tonight as I was washing a load of my grandson’s little clothes, he is 5 years old.
As I took Patrick’s clothes from the washing machine and while I was transferring them into the dryer I saw something lying at the bottom of the empty machine. I reached down to retrieve it, it was a plastic bag and in this plastic bag were a very pretty stone and an even prettier seashell.
If sorrow is old joy, then joy is all the more joyous for old sorrows.

Sorrow is always with us.....it is the shadow that walks with us on the brightest day. My grandson was waiting for my husband in Heaven. It still makes no sense but I do know that they are together and joyful, while his parents still grieve...The thing that makes it all bearable is to choke out sorrow with acts of love...in their names, in their memory, kindnesses and devotions known only to you keep the memory flame alive and vibrant, giving strength. My heart goes out to anyone who has lost an

Wow, glad you can handle it so well. Very Gibran-type sentiments.
