What do the irish think about irish americans?

I know in the United States there are many people of irish ancestry who identify themselves as irish americans.  It is the second largest ethnic group in the United States.  Since the United States is composed of many different ethnic groups many people place their ethnic origin in front of their nationality.  I have had friends who identify themselves as Japanese Americans, African Americans, German Americans, English Americans, etc.  I was just wondering what irish people living in ireland think about irish americans and irish abroad in general.  Do they like them/dislike them?  I only ask because I have heard of some animosity from irish people towards irish americans.

Just because a person is not born in ireland does not mean they are not irish.  If a cow is born in a stable it does not make it a horse.

Being an American of Irish descent I'm really surprised that there ever was animosity towards us here in the USA. I have been to Ireland many times to visit relatives and have never felt it. At the end of the day, we're all one people..just living in different places. God Bless Ireland and the USA!

My sincere apologies for the same thing appearing three times. What I meant to post was the remainder of my reply::: I do think that there are different hues of 'other-Irishness'. For example, if you think that Irish-Americans are scorned, just try volunteering that you feel Irish if you have the accent of the old enemy! It's an insular mode of thinking, although I have to say, many of my own friends do accept that identity might not be as cut-and-dried as many seem to believe. I also think that

It's a curious reaction alright, considering Ireland relies as much on American goodwill as European solidarity. I'm writing as an Irishman born and raised in Britain and with twenty years of life in Dublin since my own 'homecoming' to Ireland. You're right -there is a disdain for the 'Other Irish', which sometimes is expressed as a kind of bitter ridicule, from the bulk of the Irish who just happened, out of luck of not being forced to emigrate, to be born on the island. Hi Aaron, Gael-Mheiriceánach: An Irish American I think the attitude is slowly changing. The Irish Government are about to launch an Irish Diaspora strategy to engage more deeply with the Irish and Irish descent abroad, and younger generation Irish are become more 'globalised' in their way of thinking. From a personal perspective I think ones Irishness is determined by the strength of ones personal feelings about their Irish heritage, and not by where and when they were born. Yo
