| Irish dancing - Meet the star... John
Carey The World Champion and former star of Lord of the Dance answers
our questions.
What do your parents do for a living?
My dad has his own business, a civil engineering company. My mum works
for dad doing accounts and various other things.
Who’s your favourite recording artist?
I like all types of music. In my car CD player at the moment is the new
Oasis, Pink and Eminem albums. However when I’m getting ready for a night
out I usually have House music blaring, to get me in the mood.
Name your worst habit....
Picking my toenails.
Have you got any hidden talents we don’t know about?
I played the piano until I reached Grade five and then I took up the
piano accordian. At first I played classical music and again reached Grade
five. I then started to learn Irish dancing music; I even played at a Feis
once!
What’s your favourite bedtime drink?
If I have a sore throat, I always take hot punch to bed with me. A little
bit of brandy, hot water, sugar, cloves and lemon. It tastes great and puts
me straight to sleep. In fact I often have one, even if I don’t have a sore
throat.
Is there anything you are addicted to?
Ribena! I absolutely love it.
What were you like as a teenager?
I think I was your average teenager, nothing too wild or tame. I started
dating girls and became a lot more confident. I thought I was really cool,
but when I look back at photos, I realise I may not have been.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and whose words
of wisdom were they?
Before I danced at a major championship, my teacher, Danny Doherty, would
always say: ‘’I don’t care how tired you are, when you’ve finished, smile
and look like you could do it again with ease.’’ It obviously worked for
me!
Who was your teenage heart-throb?
I remember watching Byker Grove (a UK teenage TV programme) and fancying
Donna Air’s character, Charlie.
What’s your most treasured moment ever?
My 21st birthday was really special. Three hundred of my friends and
family were there including 100 people from LOTD. My most recent treasured
moment was on July 4 this year when I danced in Pennsylvania in front of
15,000 people. I’d forgotten the feeling of being on stage and all those
people giving standing ovations.
If you could be anyone else in the world, past or present, who would
you be and why?
I’m very happy being who I am. I’ve been very fortunate to have had such
a fantastic life so far. That’s down to having great supportive parents
who are behind everything I do.
