| Long Island, New York
By Frank Goodwin
I was born in Brooklyn, New York but from the age of four I was raised in West
Kerry. I was educated at Maharees National School and Terenure
College in Dublin.
I returned to New York at age 21 to seek suitable employment. I found
that in the finance industry and remained in that industry for my entire
career, taking 2 yrs out for service in the US Army.
Climate: Four seasons weather. Can get hot in summer and cold in winter
but not usually extreme.
Getting Around: Public transportation in Long Island, in my opinion, is
excellent. Various highways criss-cross the Island for automobiles but
can become traffic jammed during morning and evenings "rush hours".
Railroad trains are excellently scheduled for travel to New York City and
together with excellent bus service to the many beaches and shopping
malls on the Island.
Standard of Living: Compares favorably with Ireland. However, recently the
cost of living is much better here than Ireland. Housing has been
expensive but seems to be leveling off.
Banking: The choice of banks here is tremendous and all within walking
distance. I could only recommend the bank(s) I have dealt with.
Healthcare: Again, my experience with health-care has been good as it
was supplied by my employer and has continued during my retirement with
a few changes.
Personal safety: There is always the danger of robberies, both homes and
personal but it has not been a factor for me.
Leisure and Culture: All New York City leisure and culture mediums are
within a forty-five minute drive/train ride. The local pubs compare
favorably with Ireland as the good ones are all Irish.
