George
and Eileen Farr - A Transatlantic Couple
by
Imelda and Francis Murphy
Both
George Farr and his wife Eileen work for the same company, Sullivan
& Mc Laughlin Electrical.
Originally
from Monkstown, Co Cork George is now Project Manager for the electrical
contractor on Big Dig contract no C15A2, working on 1600 feet of
the Central Artery Tunnel. The multi-million dollar installation
has been going on for about two years and looks set to continue
for another two years.
Eileen
and George met in Cork. She was born in Boston of an Irish mother
(from Kerry) American father, who died when he was 36. Eileen's
mother brought her and her four siblings back to Ireland and raised
them in Cork.
Seeing
Boston again had always been a dream for Eileen. She remains happy
that she and George moved to Boston 13 years ago.
It
hasn't always been happy for them; in 1987 George fell 30 feet off
scaffolding, while working on a crane, breaking both his legs. His
injuries left him out of work for a year. After some re-training,
he began doing estimating all over America.
Eileen
was a hairdresser with Peter Marks, but is now a telecommunications
technician.
Although
she works for the same company as her husband, she presently is
not working on the Big Dig, George says she may in 2001.
