Gerry
McNally - Master Mixer
by Imelda and Francis Murphy
BARRING none
this is the largest job Gerry McNally has worked on and "the largest I'll
ever work on," he says.
Since 1992,
Gerry has supervised the mixing of well over a million cubic yards of concrete.
By 2004, the total will be about 2 million. Aggregated Industries, a UK
conglomerate, is the project's largest supplier of concrete for the project.
It has employed him to work the full expanse of both The Central Artery
Tunnel as well as the now completed Ted Williams Tunnel.
Gerry hails
from Castleblaney, County Monaghan, but worked for Cement Roadstone Holdings
throughout Ireland.
Gerry's wife,
Maureen, was born in Chicago of Irish parents, who decided to move back
to County Offaly when Maureen was two years old. Maureen and Gerry have
two boys, 20 and 17 years old. All the family are American citizens now.
As quality
control manager, Gerry oversees the mix of concrete, varying the ingredients
to meet the needs of the application. The temperature of the mix of concrete
is important so it must be heated in winter and cooled in summer. During
the summer, blocks of ice are crushed and added to the trucks before delivery.
He was involved
in all the pours of the slurry walls on the project.
Gerry says
a job like this comes along only once in a lifetime.
