Finding Accommodation
It
really depends on where you as to how is the best method to find
accommodation. However, make this your No.1 priority when
you arrive. The local newspapers, especially the Sunday classifieds
are the best place to look for an apartment or a house to rent for
your 3/5 month stay. Most of those advertised in the Sunday paper
are private so you will be dealing directly with the landlord of
this place and may have to deal with them throughout the summer
if you get into any trouble.
The alternative to this is to get the Yellow Pages and look under
Apartments where there will be an array of all the apartments
complexes in your area code. Here you will go to a rental office
where you will deal with a salesperson who is trying to sell you
the apartment.
Some Tips:
1. If you are in a location where it is very difficult to find
accommodation you may have to break some rules.
- always consider that you will not get your security
deposit back => so take this into account when calculating your
rent.
- if you have to accept a longer lease than your stay,
then you may have to tell them you are staying six months => usual
consequences are simply non return of security deposit.
- you may have to give an underestimate of the number
of people staying in your apartment => i.e. if there are five of
you going it may have to be 1-bedroom for TWO people or ten of you
would get maybe a 2-bedroom for 3 or 4 people!
- don't expect to have a bedroom each => this is a J1;
you'll be sharing floorspace for 3 months so enjoy it
- always get unfurnished - furnished will be TOO expensive
