This holiday, based in the South West of Ireland, in Killorglin, Co. Kerry, offers what may seem to be the impossible - a single base (no packing and unpacking each day) but with a sense of completing a journey. The walks cover several legs of the Kerry Way on old coach roads, allowing you to sample travel as it was in days of yore. This experience is heightened by superb views, unique flora and fauna and a landscape imbued with folklore. Add ample opportunities to enjoy the fun of evenings in an Irish pub and you get a satisfying cultural experience.
Killorglin is a vibrant village situated by the picturesque river Laune, on the Ring of Kerry. It is famous for Puck Fair (10-12 August), when a puck (goat) is crowned for 3 days. The town has many pubs and restaurants where you can listen to traditional Irish music or even partake in some set dancing!
Accommodation:Your accommodation for the week is in a quality guesthouse, based five minutes walk from the centre of the village.
DAY 1 Arrival Dinner & welcome briefing with guide at guesthouse, Killorglin
DAY 2 Dooks Beach and `Mountain` A gentle walk on road, bog road and beach allows you to experience a variety of habitats (blanket bog, sand dune, freshwater lake, seashore) as well as to view peat cuttings. End the walk with a visit to Ireland`s only Bog Village museum. Distance: 12km/7.5 miles Ascent: 50m/165ft
DAY 3 Killarney National Park This leg of the Kerry Way takes you through the Killarney National Park with visits to the ruins of Muckross Friary and into the gardens of Muckross House. Continue up past the spectacular Torc Waterfall and under the flanks of Mangerton Mountain to follow the Old Kenmare Road, finishing at the teashop in Ladies` View. Distance: 13.5km/8.3 miles Ascent: 380m/1,250ft
DAY 4 Glenbeigh to Glencar You walk from the seaside village of Glenbeigh, ascend gradually to circle Seefin Mountain and stroll downwards into the lush valley of the Caragh River in storied Glencar. Distance: 17km/10.5 miles Ascent: 350m/1,150ft
DAY 5 Option Day Options: Day tours - Ring of Kerry, Dingle Peninsula, or boat trip to Skelligs Rock. Alternatively go fishing, golfing, horse-riding, hire a bike or walk!
DAY 6 Gap of Dunloe and Black Valley You walk through the dramatic and internationally known Gap of Dunloe and continue through the ice-carved Black Valley. Distance: 16km/10 miles Ascent: 400m/1,300ft
DAY 7 Glenbeigh to Kells The final walk takes you on the early Christian route and medieval coaching road from Glenbeigh to Kells, with detours to view archaeological artefacts and views across Dingle Bay and out to the Atlantic Ocean. Distance: 17km/10.5 miles Ascent: 300m/1,000ft
DAY 8 Departure Depart for home.
