The Great Famine of the 1840s was a calamity for the Irish, writes

There were famines before in Ireland but the Great Famine of the 1840s --
the failure of the blighted potato crop on which a third of the population
depended for survival -- marked and shaped Irish society, politics and its
landscape to the present day.
