Sliotars
and Shillelaghs
At the turn of the century and before, Irish country folk had few choices
when it came to providing themselves with not only the luxuries, but also
the essentials of life. Those who could afford to, visited a local craftsman
who specialised in making what they needed; those who were skilful with
their hands made it themselves; those with no money or talent simply went
without, or waited until someone took pity on them and passed on a much-used
item for them to use.
