Hot Honeymoon Destinations
They were taking a full year to travel around the world for their honeymoon and had already been through Africa and Southern Europe and had picked Ireland as their next destination.
A little girl in flip-flops at the time, I was intrigued by the idea, as well as utterly excited to have them enter my otherwise uneventful family home that summer. As I helped them settle into the spare room, I recall being so impressed by their idea of honeymooning that their visit has since remained firmly planted in my memory.
But, of course, such ambitious plans are not for everybody: I mention it just to give an indication of how much one couple's idea of the "dream honeymoon" can be totally unique and maybe even "out there". Bearing this in mind while putting together this round up of hot honeymoon destinations, I tried to cater for a number of tastes. These hot honeymoon picks are divided into categories for beach lovers, pure romantics, exotic-break seekers, and adventurers, as well as party lovers and history buffs.
Hopefully you will find a category here that suits you.
For Beach Lovers Feel white sand between your toes and azure water at your feet as you stroll the beautiful shores of the Caribbean. Sup Pina Coladas in palm-shaded beach bars and watch the orange-glow of the sun go down over the water. From the sandy shores of Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, to the dolphin-filled waters of 90 mile beach, New Zealand, when it comes to picking a honeymoon beach holiday, you will certainly have a lot of choice. Favourites are The Cayman Islands, The Maldives, Mauritius and Indonesia. Get those brochures out and start dreaming.
For Pure Romantics What could be more beautiful than taking off down the Italian Riviera by moped, bright sunlight tripping off the olive groves and cypress trees, where all you can see for miles ahead is blue sky and water? Think of "La Dolce Vita", "Il Postino" and, most recently, "The Talented Mr. Ripley", and then of a honeymoon in Italy and let your imagination do the rest. Other landmark romantic destinations are Paris (still the perennial "City of Lights") and the South of France, where you can escape to the quiet mountain-top village of Eze and, overlooking the glittering Cote d'Azur, have a true sense of one of the world's most famous honeymoon resorts. Another dream would be to escape to a small Grecian island, such as Paros or Lesbos, and rent a beachside villa.
Somewhere Exotic You don't need to go too far to have a fascinating honeymoon experience. Morocco and Tunisia are only three hours from Dublin airport, yet the ancient mosques, bright souks and stunning Moroccan scenery or the golden deserts and marble palaces of Tunisia, will transport you to a different place and era. Other exotic destinations, highly recommended for honeymooners, are the calm inland waterways of Kerala in Southern India, a visit to the stark ochre landscapes of Namibia or a stay on the tranquil island shores of Zanzibar.
For The Adventurous If heading off for a three-day trek into the rainforest with little more than a local guide and a backpack is to your liking, an adventure holiday might be just the right honeymoon for you. Play colonial style-safari in Kenya or look into action-filled breaks in Costa Rica, Belize or the jungles of Borneo.
For Night-Life Lovers For those with a desire to be at the heart of an all-night party, why not honeymoon in one of the world's buzzing capital cities, perhaps New York, London or Madrid? Or else head to New Orleans and spend long, lazy baton-rouge like evenings over cocktails and dinner, dancing the night away in 1920's-style jazz bars. If this sounds a bit tame, why not go a bit further south and head to Cuba where the rum, cigars and salsa is sure to satisfy the party animal in you? Other great places for all-night revellers are Miami Beach, Rio, and Las Vegas,
For History Buffs If you're the type to combine a bit of serious sight-seeing with your honeymoon getaway, a road-trip between Malaga and Lisbon - taking in Seville, Granada and the breathtaking Andalucian coast all the way, might be just your style. Otherwise visit the ruins of Pompeii or the fairy-tale city of Prague. An Egyptian cruise along the Nile, coupled with a few nights in Cairo, might also tempt you.
