Home Chic Home
If you're looking for something unique to add to your wedding list or, perhaps, to your home you might want to consider the new range of Paul Costelloe designed Wedgwood dinnerware and accessories. Launched just this month, this stunning collection includes oversized pasta bowls, lipped vases and large dinner plates - all done in the understated classic style that is well known to Irish-born Costelloe.
Better known as an expert fashion designer and three-time winner of the Fil d'Or, Irish Linen Award, Costelloe is one of Ireland's best-known exports. Over the years he has become renowned for his use of high quality materials and his neutral style in clothes and, now, his chic simplicity is reflected again in every item of his 26-piece tableware range.
Like the man himself, each component of the range is big, bold and confident. Costelloe says he designed everything with an Italian al fresco meal in mind - "everyone sitting outside - all the family, grannies and babies too - with generous bowls of pasta and salads in front of them, and drinking good wine". Such vision comes across beautifully in his work.
"This style of eating is relaxed and informal," Costelloe explains "When I'm traveling, particularly around Italy, I keep all these images in my head and when I get down to designing - either for my clothing range or for tableware - so many of these influences come flooding back."
And is there a difference for him between designing Wedgwood and his new collection of clothes each season? "Oh very much so - it's very different but there are similarities. For instance, here I am working with shape and cut, which is exactly my specialty in clothes design also. Some people like colourful tableware, which is not my thing at all. Generally though, designing for tables is much easier than for the fashion world, as it is much less fussy."
Throughout the collection, elements of Costelloe's love of fabrics are evident. One of the large tubular vases has a linen design delicately engraved around its base, for example. But whether you purchase this one particular vase or buy an entire set of pasta bowls, any one of Costelloe's new pieces would be a lovely addition to a home and a must have on a bride-to-be's wedding gift list.
Paul Costelloe's new range of tableware and accessories are available exclusively at Brown Thomas in Dublin, Cork and Galway.
