There is enough Steel used on the BigDig to build a Railway Track
that will take you from Dublin City Centre all the way around the
world.
The BigDig construction is moving 16 Million cubic yards of earth.
The
BigDig will be laying 5000 miles of new optic cable and about 29
miles of Gas/Electric/sewer/water pipes
The
Big Dig is moving 620 thousand Truckloads of earth (dirt) or 16
Million cubic yards
The trucks if placed end to end would stretch from Chicago to Limerick
City. That amounts to enough dirt to fill the RDS from top to bottom
all the way 16 times.
The Big Dig is building segments of highway that are called Boxed
Tunnels and they need to float them. They weigh 50 thousand tons.
It displaces more water than the SS Titanic.
In 1983 the projected cost of the BigDig was $2.6 Billion. Today the
cost is set to run to an estimated $14.8billion.
Boston's new Cable Stayed Bridge has 1 Million feet of Cable Strand.
There are 7 wires in each Cable Strand which works out at 7 Million
feet of wire. You could wrap this wire around Ireland 17 Times
