Compass Records Acquires Rights to Distribute Green Linnet Recordings.

By Bridget English

Compass Records, a roots-music label featuring a stellar roster of artists including Solas, Paul Brady, Lunasa, Liz Carroll and Mick Moloney, has purchased the physical distribution rights to the Green Linnet Records catalog from Digital Music Group Inc ( DMGI).

In the same deal DMGI purchased the assets of Green Linnet and agreed with Compass Records to retain the exclusive rights to the physical sales of the Green Linnet catalogs.

Green Linnet Records has been home to worldwide Celtic artists for over 30 years. and has over 200 recordings from popular artists that include Dennis Cahill, Altan, Eileen Ivers, Old Blind Dogs and Cherish the Ladies.

The alliance between these two record labels will merge the roots-focused Compass with the Celtic-minded Linnet, allowing for greater calibration between artists and making Celtic roots music more accessible to all.

Garry West, co-founder of Compass Records, is excited by the opportunities this new arrangement offers. “Green Linnet is the best known brand in Celtic music and over its 30-year history the label has cultivated and educated several generations of Celtic music. We look forward to carrying that torch into the future and, with our two catalogs, becoming the go-to point for Celtic music CDs.”

Digital Music Group Chief Executive Officer Mitchell Koulouris is equally pleased with this arrangement. “As a company focused on the digital music market, this makes perfect sense for our business model,” he said. “We are pleased that Compass Records, an internationally recognized expert in Celtic music, has contracted with us to handle the physical CD sales of this rich catalog. We believe this provides the best of both worlds for the artists and consumers.”

Founded in 2005, DMGI purchases rights to music recordings and converts them into digital format for distribution to online music stores such as iTunes Music Store and MSN Music.
