The Jeanie Johnston, Ireland's replica famine ship, arrived safely and
on time–11 a.m. on Tuesday, 15 April, 2003–at West Palm Beach, Florida,
on her inaugural visit to North America.
Under the command of Captain Tom McCarthy, the Jeanie Johnston, which
originally set sail for North America from Fenit, Co. Kerry, on 16 February,
2003,was met by a flotilla of local vessels to escort her to her berth at
the Palm Beach Maritime Museum.
The schedule for the ship’s tour to date includes the following:
Savannah, Georgia, May 2-12. Charleston, S. Carolina, May 15-19.
Washington DC, May 28-June 2.
Baltimore, Maryland, June 3-9.
Philadelphia, PA, June 12-23.
Trenton, New Jersey, June 23-26.
Bristol, Pennsylvania, June 26-30.
New York City, July 3-14.
Port Jefferson, New York, July 14 - 17.
Providence, Rhode Island, July 18 - 21.
Boston, MA, July 24 - August 4.
Following these ports, the ship will continue to areas north of Boston
during August and September concluding her tour in Canada where the original
Jeanie Johnston was built in 1847. She will return home to Tralee, Co. Kerry,
in October.
