Collins to Leave NASA

Eileen Collins recently announced her decision to leave NASA, saying that she plans to spend more time with her family and pursue other interests.

Collins became the first female pilot and first woman commander of a Space Shuttle. She commandeered the “return to flight” mission last July to test flight safety and supply the International space station.

She also became the first pilot to do a 360-degree maneuver. Collins had to turn the Discovery belly up so the ISS could photograph the underside to ensure there was no damage caused by flying
