Duddy on the Move IBA
Middleweight champion John Duddy stretched his unbeaten run to 19-0 when
he defeated Anthony “The Bullet” Bonsante by technical decision
after nine rounds in Madison Square Garden on March 16. Fans were treated
to a comprehensive victory by the Derryman against Bonsante, a brave and
game opponent from Minnesota. Bonsante received an accidental head butt
in the fourth round and continued to fight, despite excessive bleeding
and blurred vision, until the fight was stopped at the end of the ninth
round.
As we
go to press, Duddy is working with the world-renowned trainer Don Turner
and his own longtime trainer Harry Keitt, in preparation for his May 18
fight against Dupre Strickland. The fight, at the Beacon Theatre in New
York, will probably be Duddy’s last in the U.S. in 2007. Irish Ropes
Promotions plan for Duddy to headline a card on July 7 at the National
Stadium in Dublin, with a possible European title challenge in the fall.
It’s all go for Duddy in what could be the most important 12 months
of his career, and the New Yorker from Derry can rest assured that his
legions of fans will be with him every step of the way. – Declan
