| Irish Crafts in Chicago Show
Ireland will make its debut at one of the most prestigious international
art fairs in November, when leading Irish artists display their works at
Chicago’s annual exposition of Sculptural Objects & Functional Art
(SOFA).
SOFA, which takes place on the weekend of November 10-12 at Chicago’s
Navy Pier, is one of the key art fairs for contemporary crafts and
applied art. Almost 100 international galleries and dealers will display
work that bridges the decorative and fine arts.
This is a collector’s paradise – presenting for sale one-of-a-kind
creations that will last a lifetime. Last year over 35,000 people
attended, and this year visitors will discover just how desirable
contemporary Irish crafts can be. The Crafts Council of Ireland’s
curator Brian Kennedy has chosen daring, innovative and beautifully
crafted pieces in glass, textiles, wood, metal and ceramics from artists
such as Seamus Gill, Angela O’Kelly, whose “Neckpiece” made of paper is
pictured above left, Liam Flynn, Cormac Boydel, and Joseph Walsh whose
“Rocking Chaise,” made from native elm, is pictured above right.
The Crafts Council of Ireland, based in Kilkenny, is dedicated to
raising the international profile of Irish crafts. Its participation in
SOFA Chicago is part of an ongoing policy of promoting Irish work in the
U.S., following displays in Loot New York, Philadelphia Museum of Art
Craft Fair and Forty Shades of Green in Memphis.
