Irish Tribute for Missing Child

June 21, 2007

By April Drew

AS the parents of missing British child Madeleine McCann made an appeal for her return on RTE, the Irish national broadcaster, on Tuesday, the Irish community in New York felt it was time they did something to help find the four-year-old girl who was abducted from a family holiday apartment in Portugal on May 3.

Linda Buckley, a mother of two children, sat down with her friend Margaret McGinley on Monday and discussed the possibility of doing something to help the child who will be missing 50 days on Friday.

Buckley, who got wind of the worldwide balloon-releasing event that Madeleine’s parents Gerry and Kate are organizing for Friday, June 22, has decided that she will organize the same event in Queens.

The event will mark the 50th day Madeleine is missing. Fifty green and yellow balloons from 50 various centers worldwide will mark the fact that the family is still searching, as are other parents of missing kids.

“We saw that lots of other countries around the world were involved in the balloon day so I thought it would be a good idea to do the same here for the poor little girl,” said Buckley.

Madeleine’s parents remain in Portugal with their two-year-old twins Sean and Ameile, still trying to make sense of what has happened to their daughter. Despite a number of possible leads in the case, there has been no inclination of Madeleine’s whereabouts.

The Portuguese police have released a description of a man seen carrying a young child about the same time as Madeleine’s disappearance.

Madeline was abducted from her apartment where she and her twin siblings were sleeping. Her parents were having dinner in their hotel complex in Praia da Luz at the time their daughter was abducted.

Since May 3, the McCanns have launched an international campaign to help find their daughter. Several A-list celebrities such as David Beckham and author J. K. Rowling have lent their names and given money to help find Madeleine.

Buckley will enlist the help of several other Irish parents and children for Friday’s ceremony. Location and time were not available at time of print. For further information on the event send an email to april@irishvoice.com.
