Charlize Still Not Marrying Type
June 13, 2008
Edited by Debbie McGoldrick
SHE’S said it before, and now she’s saying it again –Oscar winning actress Charlize Theron has no interest in making her long-term (seven years) relationship with Irish actor/director/writer Stuart Townsend legal with a traditional type wedding.
Charlize and Stu have said on several occasions in the past that they “feel” married, whatever that means, but they’re not prepared to formalize their union for any number of reasons . . . gays can’t get married so we’ll abstain in support, if it ain’t broke why fix it, etc., etc.
In the latest issue of Glamour magazine, cover girl Charlize, giving interviews promoting her starring role alongside Will Smith in the sure to be summer hit Hancock, says this about her relationship with Dubliner Townsend: “I think if you are in a one or two-year relationship, love is enough. You can thrive on that. When you hit years three and four, you realize that if you’re going to live with somebody ... you have to be nurtured emotionally and spiritually, and you have to be intrigued. Because if that intrigue runs out, you’re not going to want to go home anymore.”
Intrigue, it seems, is just as good as a gold band. “Even when I was a little girl I never dreamed of the white dress and all of that,” Charlize, 32, added. “I want to be clear: I am not judgmental about marriage. I am judgmental about how our government doesn’t want to see the reality of gay and lesbian marriages.”
The South African stunner also doesn’t have a problem with her man checking out the ladies . . . just as long as that’s all he does. “I’ve always said that I worry about being with a man who doesn’t flirt. I love that Stuart can watch tennis and tell me that he’s got a crush on a tennis player. We’re not meant to just like one person. But (that) doesn’t mean you go and build a life with another person,” she said.
Far from being Hollywood scenesters, Charlize and Stu prefer the company of friends – and a bottle(s) of red – at their home. “I’d rather get drunk on red wine and talk with people I love. Friends come over and we cook, take long walks and hang out on the beach,” she told the upcoming edition of British GQ.
Though marriage isn’t in the couple’s future, children may well be. Charlize said she’d love to experience the joys of motherhood at some stage of her life. “I want a family. I want to enjoy every moment,” she revealed.
