Farrell Happenings
June 7, 2007
by Debbie McGoldrick
THE headline in the Irish Independent last Thursday proclaimed “Farrell Floundering.” Nope, Colin Farrell hasn’t gone fishing, but the paper maintains that his Hollywood career is fading fast because a “major” studio failed to purchase the latest Woody Allen film that he happens to star in. Allen’s films aren’t exactly known for bringing in big bucks, so it’s hardly Farrell’s fault that executives aren’t falling all over his latest showcase, Cassandra’s Dream, which stars Colin and Ewan McGregor. But the film will certainly see the light of day at some stage this year, as Harvey Weinstein’s company scooped up distribution rights, and he seems pretty major to us!
“Harvey is one of the only producers-distributors around who can actually see beyond the grosses and gets real pleasure out of presenting fine movies,” Allen said. “I hope my film can live up to some of the terrific pictures he’s given the public.”
Let’s hope that Dublin native Farrell, 31, at least gets some decent critical reviews, as his career could certainly use a shot in the arm. Though he’s been hyped to the hilt he’s never really lived up to the promise, but he does have one celebrity requirement on his resume – a stint in rebab in 2005.
Cassandra’s Dream was filmed in London last year. Colin and McGregor play two brothers who are torn apart and resort to crime due to their mutual infatuation with a strange woman.
Next year certainly looks intriguing for Farrell. Early in 2008 will see the premiere of Pride and Glory, the film he shot with Ed Norton in New York last year about a family of
cops. He’s also got a project on tap with Ralph Fiennes and Brendan Gleeson.
In the meantime, on the romance front, all seems to be going well. Colin is involved with a 22-year old Trinity College student named Muireann McDonnell. The Philadel-phia Inquirer reported this week that Farrell was spotted in the city on Memorial Day lunching with an unidentified woman, presumably McDonnell.
“He professed relief to his waiter that he was unrecognized though the restaurant insists that a customer asked to buy the chair Farrell used for $500. The restaurant declined,” the piece added
