Cowen Announces U.S. Visit
July 3, 2008
By April Drew
TAOISEACH (Prime Minister) Brian Cowen announced over the weekend that he will visit New York from July 15-17. The visit will mark Cowen’s first visit to the U.S. as taoiseach.
Cowen will deliver the keynote speech at the annual Wall Street 50 dinner hosted by the Irish Voice’s sister publication Irish America magazine on Thursday, July 17. The event honors the top Irish and Irish American business executives on Wall Street.
Although Cowen’s itinerary is still to be finally determined, he is expected to meet with business leaders on Wall Street at a special breakfast in his honor on Thursday morning. He will also visit the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday, July 16.
Cowen will discuss the global economic situation and look to create stronger ties between Ireland and the U.S. during his meetings with various political leaders. While here he is also expected to discuss at length the issue of the estimated 50,000 Irish undocumented currently residing in the U.S.
Cowen has also said he will meet with members of the Irish community in New York and has been invited by the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform to meet Irish undocumented on his trip.
A reception will be held in Cowen’s honor at the Irish Consulate on the evening of the 16th.
