Brooklyn Team Grows
April 2, 2008
WHILE the GAA in New York has had its tough breaks in the last three years with the senior and junior divisions both losing teams, the local Minor Board has shown that it is growing ever stronger. With teams in all age groups going across the foam to Ireland and England for international competition and 64 teams participating within the schedules of the local division, it is a hectic time for the players and board at the minor levels.
One of the teams that have been a mainstay for decades has been Brooklyn Shamrocks, with a team participating for the last period of time at the Junior A level within the New York GAA. The news that the first week of the new schedule of the New York GAA Minor Board includes a team from the borough of Brooklyn is a tremendous achievement for the people involved at the back room level and also at the coaching level for that club.
Brooklyn Shamrocks will host Rockland on Saturday, April 5 at 5 p.m. in Coney Island. At the junction of Neptune Avenue and East 29th Street, a neighborhood that calls the famous roller coaster, the New York Aquarium and the Mets minor league baseball team its own, Gaelic football will make its debut with coaches John Moore, John Bennett and Paul Gallagher in charge of the under-10 squad that will make further history for the Shamrocks club that has been a long time contributor to New York.
A fantastic accomplishment to not only have a squad but also a home field for the fixtures on its schedule. The team has been training for an extended time as it prepares for its first championship game and the coaches can be reached at the following numbers for those children that would like to join the growing club – Gallagher, 347-782-3175, or Moore, 646-321-4021.
