Champs Issue Warning
April 16, 2008
By Eugene Kyne
Four Provinces 1-16 Sligo 1-2
COUNTY champs Four Provinces handed out a warning card to all opponents in this contest. They stated that they’ll be back for more with a comprehensive win over a powerless Sligo outfit that had no options or ideas to stop the rolling machine.
Regardless of the frailty of the challenge of Sligo, the out-of-towners fired over 17 scores, and were able to create at will.
Four Provinces had their shooting boots on to begin the contest, and they had 10 of the first 11 points of the game as they scored at will. Paul Walsh helped himself to three and looks the package for 4 P’s. His partner in the middle is Barry Quinn and they certainly complement each other. When one is attacking the other has an eye on the back.
David Doyle and Mike Higgins were dominant at the back, allowing nothing to materialize for Sligo. The Yeats boys had a pair from Enda Crehan and Enda Henry, but that was the total of their scoring in the first 30 minutes. It was a clear dominant half for the reigning county champions.
They continued the onslaught as the second half began with two chances in the first three minutes. They took advantage of the second as Liam McGourty raced in and rattled the net. They added points from Sean Mullan and Paul Walsh as they continued their control of the proceedings.
Walsh was asserting himself in his first two games in New York as a powerhouse that will help the champs in their defense of their title. Sligo had little luck at the scoring end. Indeed, when they did have a shot on goal it was desperately close but was on the wrong side of the pole from Gearoid O’Flynn.
Henry put a little better look on the board with a fortunate goal, but a double whammy from O’D, Liam O’Donnell, made the lead 1-16 to 1-2 as time ticked slowly. Thankfully Philip Sheridan saw the logic in a shortened stanza and the game was called.
It was another brilliant defensive effort from the winners. David Doyle, Mike Higgins and Patsy Moore front an impressive keeper in David Hopkins, the former Derry (Ireland) custodian.
Paul Walsh and Barry Quinn are a perfect tandem. Walsh knows exactly where the posts are.
Liam O’Donnell, O’D for short, is on fire this spring. Liam McGourty ranged far and wide for the ball and also contributed to the scoreline. His goal was a gem. Sean Mullan will get even better as the fitness level rises and his teammates use him even more.
Sligo had little to be excited about. Gearoid O’Flynn for patches was good. Enda Crehan and Conor Healy tried throughout.
