Senior A Football : Down Shows They’re Ready

DOWN put out a statement in their first game at Senior A level with a convincing win over Sligo to open the 2008 season for the New York GAA. A flurry of goals in the first half was the difference as Sligo was always chasing the game.

Down burst from the starting gate with a three point outburst from three players. Rory Galligan, Liam Farrell with a fisted effort, and Mark Dobbins on the run gave them a perfect start to the season among the big boys.

They did not slow down as the first half progressed as a Seamus Kelly effort was stopped by Dermot Fleming, but Fergal Shannon rammed the rebound to the net. When Galligan was pulled down for a penalty Dobbins tapped the ball to the net.

Sligo had no reply and indeed did not have a chance at a score until the 18th minute when a long ball from Enda Henry drifted wide, but at this point Down had put another 1-1 on the board. The goal, a brilliant move that began with Cormac Doyle, passed through county teammates Dobbins and Sean Munnelly to Barry McElduff, who gave the ball back to Dobbins, who dispatched it to the net with brilliance.

Sligo finally had a point from a free from Enda Crehan at the whistle of the shortened half, but the game was over as a contest.

The second half was far closer, but it was never going to change the final result. A point from Nester Allen was the first point of the second half, an excellent score on the run.

It was replied to by four in a row from Down from Shannon (two), Sean Munnelly, and sub Colm Cunningham. A soccer style goal from Shannon put paid to all hope for the Yeats Boys.

They did have four of the last five scores with a point from James Huvane a highlight, but the game could not finish fast enough for all.

For Down, Ross Connolly, Sean Munnelly, Mark Dobbins, Fergal Shannon who was man of the match, and Rory Galligan were in midseason form.

Sligo will look at the performances of James Huvane, Nester Allen, and Enda Crehan as the most positive.
