Dunne Wins Comeback Bout
April 16, 2008
By Cathal Dervan
BERNARD Dunne made a successful return to the ring with a straight points win over former world champion Felix Machado in Castlebar on Saturday night, eight months after his Kiko Martinez nightmare at the Point in Dublin that cost him the European super-bantamweight title.
Dunne won every round according to the referee and also survived a nasty cut above his right eye after a clash of heads midway through the bout.
“We expected Felix to come out and test me and he did,” said Dunne. “I’m a bit disappointed, I threw a good right to the body in the second round but wasn’t able to follow up on it. Overall, I thought I did well enough. He’s a seasoned campaigner. I’d like to thank him very much for coming over and giving me the chance to fight him.
“I’ll be honest, I was anxious about coming back in. Also, although this is my home soil, fighting in Mayo was new to me too but the crowd gave me great support. I didn’t box great, I should have been quicker, my hands weren’t great but to win the fight without boxing well tells you all you need to know.
“I need to get back in the ring again now as soon as possible. Brian Peters, my promoter, said he’s going to keep me busy this year.”
The beaten Venezue-lan Machado said, “Dunne is a good fighter. Make no mistake about that. I’ve no complaints about the decision, although I thought some of the rounds were close enough. I think your boy can not only win back his European title but take the world belt as well.”
Meanwhile, Ireland will have five boxers at the Beijing Olympics after Ken Egan, Darren Sutherland and John Joe Joyce all booked their flights to China with gold medal winning performances at the final qualifying tournament in Athens last weekend.
