McCullough Fight Nixed
December 6, 2007
By Declan O’Kelly
WAYNE McCullough’s comeback after 2 1/2 years of inactivity ended at the weighing scales last Friday in Belfast when Kiko Martinez failed to make the contractual weight of 8 stone 12 pounds.
The Spaniard was one and three quarter pounds over and was given an hour to make the agreed limit. Martinez made no effort to do so and the fight was cancelled.
Despite financial incentives offered to McCullough to continue with the fight and save the card, his mind was not for changing. The Belfast native, who was quite perturbed at Martinez’s lack of effort to lose the extra weight, decided that if Martinez did not make the agreed weight (which was already two pounds over the super bantamweight limit), there would be no fight.
The 37-year-old McCullough has had a run of bad luck with opponents, this being the third fight that has fallen through in the last 12 months. However, the Pocket Rocket vowed to continue his career and hopes to fight in the early New Year.
In other news, Andy Lee (14-0) will fight Jason McKay for the Irish super middleweight title at the National Stadium on December 15. McKay (18-1) will provide Lee with a real test and is a motivated fighter who has been waiting for a high profile fight like this. A full Lee fight preview will appear in next week’s issue.
