Moore to Fight in Philly
August 21, 2008
By Declan O’Kelly
LIGHT middleweight James Moore (16-1, 10 KOs) is staying very active and will return to the ring on October 4 at the Northeast Philadelphia National Guard Armory. Moore, who defeated Lloyd Joseph (12-7-3) at B.B. Kings in Times Square on August 6, will fight in an eight round contest against a yet to be named opponent.
In action on the same card as the Wicklow native will be Philadelphia-based Galwegian middleweight Simon O’Donnell (6-1, 3 KOs), who will also fight in an eight rounder. The main event will feature former light middleweight champion Kasim Ouma (25-5).
Tom Moran, former manager of past heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon, will make his debut as
event promoter. “The Philadelphia boxing community is inviting the New York boxing community to come to their city. We have a very large Irish community in north east Philadelphia and neighboring Bucks County, and this is an untapped market,” said Moran.
“I’ve seen how popular James Moore is in New York and I believe he will be just as popular in Philadelphia.”
Moore was adamant that he wanted to fight three times before the year was out, and if he keeps winning and stays injury-free, that goal is attainable. Should he emerge victorious and fit on October 4, Moore is tipped to feature on the undercard of the Roy Jones/Joe Calzaghe fight on November 8 at Madison Square Garden.
The chance to put in a good performance would be beneficial to Moore, who described his last win against Lloyd Joseph as “messy.” Moore’s matchmaker Bruce Silverglade believes the public didn’t see the real James Moore on August 6.
“I was satisfied that James won a decision against an awkward southpaw who was difficult to look good against, but I would have liked to see him sidestep and throw more hooks. He is a lot better fighter than he showed that night,” said Silverglade.
Moore is staying focused on the task ahead. “I am very happy to stay busy. The only way I am going to move up the ladder is to stay busy and fight tough opponents, so the busier I am the happier I am,” he said.
O’Donnell (6-1, 3 KOs) was last in action on March 15 on the undercard of Moore’s victory over J.C. Candelo at the Theater in MSG. On that night the 22-year-old was too strong and too fast for Chris Overbey (8-9), a former opponent of Moore, easily winning by KO in round two.
O’Donnell is trained by the aforementioned Witherspoon. The Armory is about one hour from New York and has a 2,500 capacity. For ticket information, contact Moran at 267-251-6109.
Finally, according to boxrec.com, Oisin Fagan (22-5) will not be fighting Verquan Kimbrough (20-1) as planned on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights on August 29. The 34-year-old was meant to rematch Kimbrough after a closely contested split decision loss back in December 2007.
However, it appears that Kimbrough’s opponent in the other corner for the NABA lightweight title will be Michael Clark (37-5).
