Corina Takes On Simon Cowell

By Sean O’Driscoll

THE Irish neighborhood of Woodlawn on the Bronx/Yonkers border is celebrating this month as singer Corina Brouder appears on the NBC talent show, America’s Got Talent.

Corina, whose song, “Another Day” was used in a national TV campaign to promote Sex and the City reruns in 2005, got through to the next round of the new Simon Cowell talent show while playing the Irish harp and singing.

She was judged by singer Brandy, actor David Hasselhoff and British journalist Piers Morgan.

The show is presented by Regis Philbin and was conceived by American Idol producer and bad-boy judge, Simon Cowell.

The show is heavily modeled on the American Idol formula with a sympathetic and nasty judge. This time, the competition has been broadened out to a more general talent contest.

Corina, a champion Irish American harp player who features on a national ad campaign for Dan Dooley car rentals, beat off hundreds to appear on the show and has easily made it to the next round.

While her sister, Christina, could not confirm that Corina had cleared the first round, she said that Corina sang Sarah MacLachlan’s “In the Arms of an Angel” while playing the Irish harp.

”As her sister and number one fan - I must say that she looked and sounded beautiful. The harp was already set up on stage for her and once Regis Philbin introduced her, she had to come down the aisle similar to the Price is Right show,” Christina said.

“She was performing on stage in front of the three judges, and they all have the option to ‘X’ her during her performance to make her stop singing,” Christina added.

The show will air on June 28. Corina is having a friend tape the show as she’ll be in Washington with the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform to campaign for Congressional support for an immigration bill.

Her family is hoping for as much support as possible for the next round of the show on July 12.

Corina, three of her sisters and her brother are in a music group together, known as The Spirits of Gilbride who sing, play keyboards, violin, harp, guitar, drums, tin whistle, bagpipes and accordion.
