A Great Harpist Plays Manhattan
By Paul Keating
The Yuletide hustle and bustle seems to revolve around the commercialism that the media throws endlessly our way. The seasonal music choices abound to help relax us and put us in a better frame of mind to enjoy the holiday with friends and family.
One such choice is upcoming this weekend when Aine Minogue brings her delightful harp music, song and poetry to Satalla, the home for world music in the Chelsea section of Manhattan on Sunday, December 19.
Minogue originally hails from Co. Tipperary but has been living in the Boston area for 15 years now. While she is one of America’s most prolific Irish harpists with seven recordings to her credit, this is her first concert in New York City.
Like many harpists from Ireland she gained performing experience at Bunratty Castle in Clare and recently she did an intensive masters at the innovative University of Limerick Music Program in Ireland which allowed her to study with the finest harpists in Ireland and Scotland.
For the Satalla show she plans a spontaneous mix of material that she has gathered over the years from Ireland, Scotland and Wales that focus on the Winter Solstice (just a few days past on December 21) and Christmas traditions in music, song and verse.
Since she is also well known for her meditative music, the early evening show may help calm the senses for a few hours at least. Find out more about Aine Minogue at www.minogue.com.
The Satalla show is Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at 37 West 26th Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue. Reservations and information can be obtained
