Dual Citizenship

“MY grandmother was born in Co. Galway. I have her birth certificate and paperwork that would allow me to apply for an Irish passport. I contacted my congressional representative about this matter and was told that if I proceeded with my Irish citizenship application, my U.S. citizenship would be in jeopardy. Is this true? What would happen if I applied for Irish citizenship? I would like to, but I don’t want to do anything to impact my status as an American citizen.”
