A Soldier’s Story Sergeant Frank Carvill, a 20 year
veteran of the National Guard, was 51 when he was killed in Iraq in June
2004. Before that fatal day he wrote long marvelous letters home to his
friends and family about the beauty of Baghdad, and its hidden dangers,
as well as his profound relief that he never had to fire his gun. A pillar
of Irish American New York, he was also that rare thing a standup guy
who never let you down. The following article by CAHIR O’DOHERTY
includes excerpts from letters he sent home.
