Coghlan in NYPD Badge Flap

By Sean O’Driscoll

Irish track star Eamonn Coghlan has been drawn into a dispute about the number of honorary police badges given out in New York City every year.

While Coghlan earned his, former mayor Ed Koch has joined a campaign to stop the practice of giving out honorary badges to businessmen friends of the mayor and his political cronies.

The badges are especially valuable in New York as they often get the owner off on parking and speeding tickets.

Among those who have them — Donald Trump, Home Depot’s owner Ken Langone and Citigroup banking boss Sanford Weill.

Even ousted and massively overpaid former New York Stock Exchange boss Dick Grasso has a no-fine pass for his troubles. Divorce attorney for the celebs, Raoul Felder, also has one.

“It’s disgusting and too foul to put into words,” said former Mayor Ed Koch, who has one.

Coghlan came into the fray this week to say that he never used his to get off on speeding tickets, even though he was advised that it could be useful.

The practice really took off under Mayor Giuliani was mayor. His three top cops named 41 honorary commissioners and some 20 honorary deputies. Disgraced crime czar Bernard Kerik added 12, police documents shown to the Daily News revealed this week.

In 1995, Coghlan won one his for work with children’s hospitals. Coghlan said he still had his in his pocket but would never abuse it.

The figures show that Police Commissioner Ray Kelly is cutting down on the practice. He has only given out four, compared to 23 for former Giuliani commissioner Howard Safir and 12 for Kerik.
