Cavan Sevens Ready to Go

WITH the New York GAA season on the near horizon, the annual rite of passage begins with the John Joe Cassidy Memorial seven a side tournament sponsored by the Cavan football club. It will take place at Van Cortland Park with April 15 penciled in on the calendar.

Over the last number of years it has provided the public with a rip roaring start to the season, with the last three years giving us three different winners. Westmeath conquered Cavan in 2004 to take that year’s title, but the day was also remembered by the outstanding displays of Barry Annette for Cavan, for which he took home player of the tournament honors.

Meath defeated the hosts in 2005, with New York star David “Lar” Callaghan the star of the show, and Cathal Loughnane accepting the cup for the Royals.

In 2006 Cavan finally reached the summit with Kevin Lilly leading the way as MVP, although they did take an unorthodox route to the top! Fifteen teams are invited to this year’s competition, and they are advised to forward their $250 deposit as soon as possible to a Cavan club member to secure their spot on the roster.

Dessie O’Reilly at 914-321-3114 is the point man.
