GAA:
The Rule 42 debate is gaining momentum at every GAA county convention across the country. Already the likes of Cavan and Kerry have proposed motions to congress that will allow the GAA to rent Croke Park to the Football Association of Ireland and the Irish Rugby Football Union, but it’s not time to open the champagne just yet. Westmeath official Paddy Collins is upset at recent remarks by Brian Kerr about the state of the Croker pitch and Kerr’s belief that “football matches should be played on football grounds with football pitches.” It may be looking good for the liberals but this ain’t over yet, not by a long shot.
RUGBY:
Funny little story from Leinster second row Malcolm O’Kelly. Asked what the funniest thing was he’d heard recently, big Mal decided to turn the attention on an Irish international colleague. “He was asked where the English Channel was and said it was the button next to RTE 2,” quipped the giant lock. The program did name the individual concerned – but we may need some quotes between now and the end of the Six Nations!
SOCCER:
There’s a case running in the Labor Court right now concerning two Aer Rianta workers, who just happen to be Celtic fans, who claim they were sacked for asking Rangers fans to cover up their shirts as they went through the airport. The pair claim they only acted to protect the Rangers fans as the airport was full of Celtic nuts at the time – and I probably believe them!
