| Cycling tour to make a return
THE professional cycling Tour Of Ireland is making a return some 15 years
after the final Nissan Classic.
Minister for Sport, Arts and Tourism John O’Donoghue announced that
the big names of professional cycling would be traversing Ireland’s
countryside this August thanks to the generous sponsorship of Fáilte
Ireland.
Sean Kelly a former winner of four Classics and the Tour Of Ireland
said: “Irish cycling is well thought of on the European scene. I
don’t see any problems attracting the big names from the ProTour
scene.
“The Autumn Classics will be on the horizon and it will be advantageous
for the top teams to come to Ireland.
“The organisers of the Tour Event Group have a great understanding
of the sport. It will be an opportunity for the Irish professionals who
ply their trade to showpiece themselves in the event.”
Fáilte Ireland recognised that the coverage the media gives to
sport in Ireland warranted the new investment.
The Tour is fully supported by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism,
through the sports tourism initiative. |
