No-frills present

Beware if you’re buying Ryanair gift vouchers as a Christmas present this year.

If the person who receives the vouchers books a flight for less than the face value of the voucher Ryanair keeps the balance.

So if you have a £50 voucher and your flight is £30 then Michael O’Leary pockets the difference.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that you can only use three vouchers per return flight — so if you’re lucky enough to be given four £25 vouchers you couldn’t use them all to pay for an £85 flight.

The vouchers can only be used in telephone bookings not online, which are more expensive than online bookings and finally gift vouchers must be used within six months of purchase.

No point in complaining about it though. It’s the same ethos as Ryanair flights themselves.

Michael O’Leary has revolutionised air travel and in the process has restructured the map of Europe.

When Ryanair opens an airport in a hitherto sparsely visited part of Europe, it means more to the locals than all their EU area development subsidies put together.

He has done this by cutting costs to the bone — when he says “no frills” he means precisely that.

And that includes vouchers.
