The bones of the story

A new series of flexible archaeological adventures has been launched by Bare Bones part of Andante Travels that is suitable for families. Each of the five new escorted tours which are suitable for families balances world-class monuments on the tourist trail with off-the-beaten-track segments. Among those introduced for 2007 are Crete, Jordan and Egypt and Libya.

The tours:

LEPTIS: A short tour in Libya to catch the unmissable sites the unspoilt classical cities of Leptis Magna and Sabratha. Various departures inc. five days £1,100.

MINOANS: The best of the Minoan palace sites of Crete, including the most famous Knossos as well as the opportunity to walk the Samaria Gorge. Eight days £1,100.

PETRA: Travel through deep and diverse historical and geological eras. From the Roman Mediterranean through the copper mountains to the sandstone deserts of Wadi Rum (optional) and Petra with its extraordinary tombs. Spend a night camping and a day walking through Jordan’s beautiful National Park at Wadi Feinan. Eight days £1,100.

WESSEX: Walk amongst the stones of Stonehenge at first light and Avebury and discuss the latest ideas behind two of Britain’s most spectacular prehistoric sites. Two days £295.

EGYPT: Pyramids, obelisks, colossi, hieroglyphs, pharaohs, animal-headed gods... all the highlights of this unique civilisation linked by the life-giving Nile. Eight days £1,350.
