| Travel news The beautiful area of South Armagh which US writer Paul Theroux once described
as being on a par with Provence despite its military installations and
helicopter gunships is now using its battle-scarred past as a lure for
visitors.
Troubles tourism has come to the border county which already boasts such
attractions as the ancient cathedrals of Armagh city, the glorious orchard
country to the west and the natural phenomenon of Slieve Gullion which
attracts geologists from around the globe.
For so long a no-go area a newly-devised South Armagh Tour is offering
visitors a mix of mythology, archaeology, history, literature, politics
(both ancient and modern) and genealogy.
The tour takes in significant archaeological sites, explores the pre-Christian
rituals of pagan Ireland and visits sites associated with recent conflict
in the region.
The 19th century model village of Bessbrook is also on the itinerary
during the height of The Troubles the army base in the village boasted
the busiest heliport in Europe.
Mark Mohan, chief executive of Armagh and Down Tourism Partnership, said:
“Tourism within South Armagh is still in its infancy but has huge
potential.”

n The epic trek to the departure gates at Dublin Airport has come in
for severe criticism. Congestion was eased with the opening of a new temporary
pier used primarily by Ryanair but new problems have been created.
Passengers are now faced with a walk of more than one kilometre from the
main part of the terminal to the departures gate at the temporary building.
The current situation is particularly problematic for elderly or infirm
travellers because of the absence of a moving walkway.
But relief is in sight the temporary pier is due to be removed when
the Pier D is completed in September.
The new e64million two-storey pier will have 12 gate lounges and one business
lounge in addition to separate arrivals and departures lounges.
