Actor Broderick in accident in
Donegal
HOLLYWOOD
superstar Matthew Broderick broke his collarbone in a horse-riding accident
last week while on holiday with his wife Sarah Jessica Parker in Ireland.
The Ferris Bueller and Wargames actor was hurt after falling from his
mount at a secluded beach in Donegal.
He was rushed by ambulance to Sligo General Hospital where he underwent
emergency surgery. But he was eventually released and has since continued
his vacation with his family.
The New York-born actor’s parents frequently holidayed in the area
when he was a boy and he bought a holiday home of his own close to the
family property.
The couple have often spoken of their love for the relaxed atmosphere
of Donegal and its contrast to their own cosmopolitan lives in New York
City. The pair has even hinted that they would like to move there in the
future.
In a recent interview in an airline in-flight magazine Broderick enthused
about the virtues of Donegal.
The 44-year-old star said: “It’s so green because of the rain.
The downside is you could spend a month there and barely get out because
it just rains. But the main attraction to me is, honestly, the people,
the farmers who have been there forever and ever. The families I have
known my whole life are so interesting.”
This is not the first accident to befall the actor in Ireland. He was
involved in a fatal car accident near Enniskillen in Co. Fermanagh in
1987 while traveling with his then girlfriend — Dirty Dancing star
Jennifer Grey — which claimed the lives of two women.
Anna Gallagher aged 30 and her multiple sclerosis-suffering mother Margaret
aged 63 were killed when Broderick’s rented car veered on to their
side of the road.
The actor was taken to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital with a
broken leg, broken ribs and a punctured lung.
He sent a note of condolence to Anna’s brother Martin and was later
fined £100 after pleading guilty to careless driving.
