Actresses’ leap of faith to play out women’s issues

Four Irish beauties have taken a leap of faith to tread the boards as part of a new business venture.

Friends and family turned out at the Etcetera Theatre in Camden recently for the debut performance of two short plays by a newly-formed Irish theatre production company.

Priory Productions was set-up by four young Irish actresses living and working in London who decided to create their own company and put on theatre shows — written by women for women — in the capital.

The company is made up of Eileen Cooney — who is daughter of the newly-appointed Irish Ambassador to London David Cooney — alongside Sarah James, Sarah Burke and Kelly Stone.

Eileen Cooney, who was born in Dublin said: “We were absolutely thrilled with our three nights in Camden.

“It was a complete sell-out and the feedback has surpassed all our expectations.”

The two plays — entitled Friends Of The Deceased and Nine — were written by New York playwright Jane Shepard and all four actresses take part.

Following their debut success, the foursome is now looking at filming short movies and thinking about their next plays.

Twenty-five-year-old Eileen said: “We talked to different directors on the night and they seemed very positive towards our production.

“It’s a step in the right direction and we’re looking to feature in the Dublin Fringe next year.

“We’re on the lookout for writers who are interested in women’s issues and are looking to get the rights to Alan Ball’s play Five Women sometime in the future.”
