Boyzone singer abused for being
gay
By Elaine Sheridan
Former Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has experienced a homophobic attack
in Kent, where he is appearing in the stage adaptation of the Wizard Of
Oz.
The Dubliner, who recently married his entrepreneur partner Andy Cowles
officially, said he was shocked and shaken by the attack which saw a number
of youths corner him outside Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre.
The 30-year-old said: “Canterbury is beautiful and I loved it. When
I first arrived, I thought seriously about buying a property here. I wanted
to make it my home.
“But I have been abused by teenagers and lots of people are rude
to me in shops because I am gay. It’s frightening.”
During Gately’s most recent attack in the English countryside an
off-duty policeman stepped in and called for help. He said: “It
was a frightening situation and the victim was left shaken. We are still
looking for those responsible.”
Gately went public about his sexuality in 1999.
