CD REVIEWs

By Phil Savva

Various artistes, Hardcore Heaven 3

IF YOU like your dance music hardcore and heavy then — as the name suggests — Hardcore Heaven 3 will be for you.

Hardcore Heaven 3 features three of the top DJs currently on the scene — Sy, Brisk and Kevin Energy — each with their own distinctive style of sound.

Each of the CDs is a combination of the DJ’s mixes of named artistes tracks together with their tunes.

CD1 features DJ Sy and amongst his selection is a fantastic high-energy, fast-paced mix of Lasgo’s All Night Long. Fergus Mayhem’s Take Control rips through the beats with some razorsharp synths and bass while Sy’s very own Caught Up In Your Love momentarily slows from breakneck speed before spinning off into warp drive again.

Brisk features on CD2 with Poison Rain & Cube::Hard’s Stingray — an almost ‘rocky’ rendition. Brisk teams up with Vagabond for Hit The Deck which is a bouncy mix of synths and bass while Benx-Treme & MC Ortie’s Looking Down and Asa & S1’s Show Me Your Passion are just as relentless.

Finally, CD3 features Kevin Energy with the incomparable DLS’s Freefall — fast, racy synths throughout — while EFM-7’s Raver Raver Raver has more subtle beats but is still a great dance track. Weaver’s Rock It is also another uplifting track with great synth crescendos rising over bass beats.

A target audience admittedly but worth a listen to if you’re into the scene.

Various artistes, Maximum Bass 2

MORE DANCE music on offer — this time from the excellent Ministry Of Sound label.

Maximum Bass 2 takes its influences from across the dancefloor genres and from past and present.

Whether it be Drum & Bass, Garage, Breaks or House it’s all here with the overrriding element of heavy bass.

Check out the following on CD1 — The Prodigy’s Voodoo People, Freestylers’ Push Up, Shy FX’s Shake Ur Body and Puretone’s Addicted To Bass. Best track though comes from Pendulum with the excellent Slam.

Groove Armada’s Superstylin’, Warren G & Nate Dogg’s Regulate and 2 Pac’s How Do You Want It all feature on CD2.

Be proud, play it loud.
