Canavan art exhibition
AN
EXHIBITION of paintings by a renowned Irish artist goes on display in
London next week.
The Streets Of London is an exhibition of work by Irish painter Bernard
Canavan.
It runs for three weeks from Tuesday, November 6 until Friday, December
7 at the Hammersmith Irish Centre.
Bernard’s work recently featured in Kings — a film about the
Irish in London which was premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
His paintings are not only about emigration but the experience of living
with people’s passions and desires, loves and losses played out
in each picture.
He has been praised for highlighting areas of the Irish psyche which up
to now have only been explored in literature.
The theme of emigration is close to Bernard’s heart as he himself
left Ireland in 1959.
Having studied history, economics and politics at Oxford as a mature student,
he now paints full-time about his long-term passion: Ireland and the Irish.
Ken Loach — who directed the film The Wind That Shakes The Barley
— said of his work: “I found the paintings very eloquent.”
