Civil War tale is most popular Irish movie of the decade
The Wind That Shakes The Barley is the most popular home-grown movie
of the last decade according to the Irish Film Board.
The Civil War movie starring Cillian Murphy and Jonathan Rhys Myers
pulled in an incredible €4.1million (about £3.13million) at
the box office in 2006 and was the top grossing movie backed by the board
since 2000.
The film Intermission came in second place taking €2.5million (about
£1.9million) at the box office.
Comedy Man About Dog and The Magdalene Laundries broke the €1million
mark with the former scoring just over €2million (about £1.5million)
and the convent-centred drama making €1.39million (about £1.06million)
in 2002.
About Adam, Agnes Brown and Neil Jordan’s Breakfast On Pluto also
scored highly in the money stakes.
The production report from the board also revealed that Irish cinema is
more popular than ever with 401 screens in the country compared to just
322 five years ago.
In 2006 there were almost 18million tickets bought by Irish people who
love sitting down in front of the big screen.
Around 350 films are released in Ireland each year but unsurprisingly
Hollywood won over home-grown movies in 2007. |
