Demand for Enright’s book soars after award

THE PUBLISHERS of Irish author Anne Enright’s Booker Prize-winning novel have printed an extra 125,000 copies of the book since it won the award.

Publisher Jonathan Cape printed an extra 50,000 copies after the £50,000 prize was awarded.

And Grove Press, which publishes the novel in America, has produced an extra 75,000 copies.

Jonathan Cape said orders for the book were very positive and it appeared to be selling well.

It added the 50,000 extra copies were an initial print run and more would be printed if demand continued to be strong.

And a spokesman for Grove Press said orders had been strong from both mainstream and independent book stores and there was particular demand in Canada where Enright is already very popular.

The Gathering was the bestselling fiction title on online bookseller Amazon.co.uk last week and was listed third on the site’s overall best-seller list.

Industry sources said fiction by authors with a similar profile to Enright would generally only sell about 4,000 copies.

Before winning the Booker Prize, Enright had expressed concern over the sales of her book.

In an interview three weeks ago she said The Gathering had sold just 834 copies in Britain in August.

Enright’s Booker win followed John Banville’s victory in 2005.

More than 250,000 copies of his winning novel The Sea were sold in the year after it won the prize.

Banville’s publisher Picador said there had also been a dramatic increase in sales of his back catalogue.
